Toyota Hilux AN220 9th Gen Wheel Fitment Guide — Sizes, Offsets, and What Actually Fits
The 9th gen Hilux (AN220, 2025–2026) arrives with factory wheels so deeply tucked into the arches that most owners immediately start planning replacements. This guide covers every parameter — bolt pattern, offset sweet spots, what rubs, how to fix it, and the IFS lift myth that sends people down the wrong path.

Why the Factory Wheels Look Wrong
Top-spec SR5 and Rogue trims leave the factory on 18×7.5 at ET+30 with 265/60R18 tyres. ET+30 on a 7.5" wide wheel sits the tyre face far inside the fender line — the arch looks empty, the truck looks narrow, and the sidewall sits well short of the fender edge. Almost every AN220 that passes through a tyre shop gets wider wheels on the same day.
The AN220 platform was specifically engineered with more clearance in the front arches than the 8th gen. Toyota increased the gap between the tyre and the inner arch — both fore and aft of centre — which means the new truck accepts larger fitments at stock height with fewer modifications than its predecessor. That extra clearance is what makes this generation genuinely interesting to build.
Wheel Width and Offset
The most popular aftermarket width is 9 inches across all diameters — 17×9, 18×9, and 20×9 for street-focused builds. The offset choice determines the result.
ET+15 — Clean Daily Build
Sits visibly wider than the factory ET+30, fills the arch without breaking the fender line. At maximum suspension articulation (full compression on rough terrain), the tyre clears without contact. No lift required for standard tyre sizes at stock height. The legal, road-registered choice for owners who need to pass compliance checks.
ET0 — The Sweet Spot
This is what most AN220 owners settle on. The tyre face sits flush with the factory fender flare — exactly where the body line ends. The tread sits under the arch, while the sidewall shoulder knobs protrude slightly beyond it. On a 9" wide wheel, ET0 transforms the truck visually: it reads as a properly proportioned truck rather than a factory compromise. This is the offset that makes the AN220 look the way the design suggests it was meant to look.
Rubbing — What Touches, and How to Fix It
The common fitment is 17×9 ET0 with 265/70R17. At this combination on completely stock suspension, there is one contact point: the inner face of the front factory mud flaps at full steering lock.
The fix is straightforward. The mud flap is trimmed from the inside — a small amount of material removed where the shoulder of the tyre passes — invisible from outside the vehicle. The remaining inner arch liner near the body mount area is secured back with a zip tie. After this, there is no contact at any steering angle, at any suspension position, on stock height.
If the truck is fitted with a front bullbar, this problem disappears entirely — the bar repositions the front arch geometry enough that the mud flap interference point no longer exists. Rear arches present no fitment issues at this wheel and tyre combination.
The IFS Lift Myth
This is worth understanding clearly because it causes genuine confusion and money wasted on incorrect setups.
Lifting an independent front suspension with strut spacers or adjustable coilovers changes the resting position of the suspension arms — the truck sits higher at rest with the arms hanging lower. It does not change the arc the wheel travels during compression. When the suspension compresses under braking or over a bump, the wheel follows the exact same physical path into the arch that it always did — raised or not.
This means: if a wheel and tyre combination contacts the inner arch at full compression on a stock-height truck, it will contact at the same point on a lifted truck. A lift does not create clearance for a wider, lower-offset wheel. It only changes where the suspension sits at rest. If you need more arch clearance, the answer is a longer-travel suspension (a-arm relocation or a coilover with significantly more droop travel), not simply a strut spacer.
The practical conclusion: size your wheel and tyre for the arch as it exists, not for the arch you hope a lift will create.
Tyre Sizes
33" — Stock Height
265/70R17 (32.7") is the dominant choice at this level and the one most AN220 owners run first. Fits at ET0 with the mud flap trim described above. No lift required. Proportional on the body, capable on trail, manageable on fuel.
34–35" — With Lift
Moving to 285/70R17 (33.8") or 35×12.50R17 on a 3" long-travel setup is the committed build path. At these sizes, inner arch liner trimming and alignment work are required. Caster should be set as far forward as possible to centre the tyre in the arch during compression.
Rugged Terrain Tyres — Why the AN220 Community Moved Here
The tyre category conversation has shifted on the AN220 platform. Most experienced owners have moved away from pure all-terrain (A/T) and mud-terrain (M/T) towards rugged terrain (R/T) — a category that combines a reinforced three-ply M/T-grade carcass with a tighter, more road-oriented centre tread. Kenda Klever R/T and Maxxis Razor R/T are the two most discussed options on the 9th gen platform.
The reason the R/T category fits the AN220 well: the truck's 2.8L diesel (500 Nm at the rear wheels) makes a dedicated M/T tyre genuinely dangerous on wet pavement. Multiple owners report the rear stepping out through wet roundabouts under moderate throttle with full M/T tyres. An R/T centre pattern provides enough wet grip that the stability electronics aren't catching the truck constantly, while the reinforced sidewall and aggressive shoulder blocks still perform on trail and sand.
Airing Down on Sand
The stiff three-ply sidewall of an R/T tyre behaves differently from standard A/T rubber when dropping pressure for soft terrain. Where a standard A/T begins to properly deform its contact patch around 24 PSI (1.6 bar), an R/T sidewall needs approximately 18 PSI (1.2 bar) before the carcass folds correctly and delivers the wide footprint required on sand. Airing down to A/T pressures with R/T tyres leaves most of the available traction on the table.
Rotation
Aggressive block tread patterns wear unevenly if not rotated. On the AN220 with off-road pattern tyres, rotation every 5,000 km is not optional — skipping it produces uneven block wear that causes audible tread noise at highway speed, which compounds progressively with every additional kilometre unrotated.
Forged vs Steel Wheels — What Changes on the AN220
Steel wheels have a useful reputation for durability in genuine off-road applications, but on a platform like the AN220 — particularly at the 9" width and off-road tyre combination — unsprung mass becomes a tangible problem. A steel 9" wheel is significantly heavier than a forged aluminium equivalent. Combined with heavy R/T or M/T rubber, the rotational mass increases noticeably.
The effect is measurable in three ways: the truck accelerates more slowly, fuel consumption rises (already affected by the wider tyre profile), and the brakes work harder because there is more wheel weight to decelerate. The AN220's fuel range on a 60–65 litre tank already drops to approximately 550 km when running larger off-road tyres — additional rotational mass compounds this further.
Balancing is the second consideration. Large steel wheels are more difficult to balance precisely, and minor imbalance at 9" width translates to vibration felt through the steering column at highway speed. Forged aluminium holds its balance better and allows tighter tolerances on the balancing machine.
