ET28–42 — Conservative Street Fitment

ET20–25 — Balanced Fitment

On TRD Pro/Trailhunter with factory flares, ET20 sits perfectly.

ET0 to -12 — Aggressive/Lifted Only

Significant poke — 40–70mm outward from stock position. At this offset, the wheel sticks well outside standard fender guards and changes the steering scrub radius noticeably. Requires a lift, fender trimming, and usually aftermarket flares. Not suitable for stock suspension — the wheel will contact the inner arch at full compression and lock.

Tyre Size Guide — What Fits and What It Takes

Up to 33" (285/70R17, 275/70R18) — Minor Reversible Mods

Fits on stock suspension with the following modifications — all reversible, no cutting:

  • Remove front mud flaps
  • Remove front bumper air dam (lower plastic valance)

35" (35×12.50R17) — Committed Build

35" on the 6th gen requires more than a lift. On smooth tarmac with 2.5–3" lift they may appear fine — but the moment the truck hits off-road and reaches full suspension droop, the tyre contacts and destroys the plastic arch components. A proper 35" build requires:

  • Lift of 3" minimum
  • Cutting and trimming the plastic bumper corners
  • Trimming rocker panel extensions
  • Rolling/trimming inner arch metal
  • Extended bump stops to limit suspension travel

35" is a legitimate build target for the 6th gen, but it's a build — not a bolt-on.

Wheel Width — The Optimal Range

For off-road focused builds: 8.5 or 9 inch width on 17" or 18" diameter is the proven sweet spot. Wide enough to run 285+ tyres without sidewall bulge, narrow enough that inner arch clearance is manageable.

20" wheels (factory on Limited/Platinum) leave very little tyre sidewall for off-road use — the low-profile rubber is optimal for road refinement but poorly suited to trail use where sidewall flex and impact absorption matter. If the truck goes off-road, 17" or 18" is the correct diameter.

Load Rating — The Mistake That Kills Ride Quality

The 6th gen 4Runner's TNGA-F platform is stiffer than previous generations. This amplifies the effect of tyre load range choice.

Avoid Load Range E (10-ply): These are engineered for heavy diesel pickup trucks carrying significant payload. On a 4Runner, they're overbuilt — the high inflation pressure and stiff sidewall construction results in a harsh, truck-like ride that eliminates the platform's refinement entirely.
