The Crash Bar — What It Is and Why It Matters
Behind the front wheels of the Y63/Armada sits a structural crash bar added for front offset crash test compliance. Unlike most SUV fitment constraints — arch liners, suspension components, brake calipers — this crash bar limits tyre clearance at full steering lock, not at ride height compression.
The practical consequence: maximum tyre size is constrained not by the fender or arch, but by how close the tyre sweeps to this bar when the steering is turned fully. On stock 20×8.5 ET45 wheels, the proven maximum without any modification is 285/60R20 BFGoodrich KO3 (33.5") — one size up from the factory Yokohama Geolandar.
Note: 285/60R20 BFGoodrich KO3 with 1.5" spacers has been tested and rubs the crash bar. This is a direct example of why spacers are the wrong solution on this platform — correct offset from the start is the only safe approach.
Going beyond 33.5" requires crash bar modification or removal. This is a structural component that affects crash safety — modify with full understanding of that trade-off.
Why Offset Works Differently on the Y63 / Armada
This is the most important thing to understand if you're coming from Y62 or Land Cruiser fitment experience.
On most lifted SUVs, the goal is to reduce offset to push the wheel outward and fill the arch. On the Y63/Armada, doing this moves the tyre outward — which means at full steering lock it sweeps further outward and closer to the crash bar.
Result: aftermarket wheels with more negative offset than stock make crash bar clearance worse, not better. The stock ET45 keeps the tyre tucked inward, maximising the gap to the crash bar at full lock.
The proven aftermarket offset range is ET12–ET18 on 18" wheels — notably less aggressive than what Y62 or Land Cruiser owners run. Going further negative on the Y63/Armada causes crash bar contact at full lock.

22" fitment on the Y63/Armada is tight. Minor crash bar contact at full lock has been reported at ET20 with 285/50R22. Viable for primarily on-road use where full steering lock is rarely reached — not recommended for any off-road use.
Tyre Sidewall Lugs — When Numbers Lie
Aggressive mud-terrain tyres with large sidewall knobs add physical width beyond the nominal tyre measurement. A tyre like the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT, for example, features pronounced sidewall lugs that push the physical width several millimetres beyond the section width on paper. At the crash bar clearance margins of the Y63/Armada, this additional width matters.
If running aggressive mud-terrain rubber with large sidewall knobs, stay at the conservative end of the tested offset range (ET18 rather than ET12) and verify clearance at full lock before driving off-road.
What Comes After Crash Bar Modification
Owners running modified crash bars on Patrol Y63 and Armada confirm 295/70R18 BFGoodrich KO3 (34.3") as a working fitment at ET12. Once the crash bar is addressed, the next limiting factor becomes upper control arm clearance. At that point, slightly more negative offset helps inner clearance — but creates a balancing act with outer arch clearance. This is still early-stage territory for the Y63/Armada platform and fitment data continues to develop.
